What’s Actually Coming to North Huntsville
The proposal centers on a single Tesla Megapack, a container-sized lithium-ion battery designed to store and discharge electricity during peak demand. Huntsville Utilities says the system will charge when power demand and prices are low, then discharge during periods of extreme heat or cold — lowering peak-power costs and reducing strain on grid equipment. It is not intended as a backup source for extended outages; its output will be capped below the 2,400 kVA maximum to limit degradation and serve only the portion of the grid connected to the Stringfield Substation.
The project is partly funded by a $125,000 American Public Power Association grant, and federal tax credits apply. Announced in December 2025, it is framed as a pilot that could inform future storage deployments at other substations across the city-owned utility’s territory.
