Tesla has quietly expanded availability of its latest home battery system to Northern Ireland. As of a July 29 announcement, homeowners can now request quotes for the Powerwall 3 through Tesla’s network of certified installers, according to Tesla accessories retailer BASENOR.
The move brings an all-in-one solar-and-storage device to a market where whole-home backup has often required cobbling together multiple boxes and complex grid applications. But the launch is very much a starting line, not a finish line. Installer numbers are thin, and local grid constraints mean that what a Powerwall 3 can do on paper may not be what your connection allows.
A battery and inverter in one box
The Powerwall 3 isn’t just another battery. It packs a 13.5 kWh lithium-ion pack and a built-in solar inverter into a single unit, eliminating the need for a separate string inverter when adding storage to a new solar array. That consolidation matters: fewer devices on the wall, a single point of installation, and potentially simpler system design.
Tesla rates the unit for up to 11.04 kW of continuous power on-grid and in backup mode. That’s enough to start a 185 A locked-rotor-amp motor—think heat pumps and well pumps—and makes whole-home coverage far more realistic than with earlier residential batteries that topped out closer to 5 kW.
The UK-spec model accepts up to 20 kW DC of solar input across three maximum-power-point tracking (MPPT) channels, giving installers flexibility to design arrays across multiple roof orientations. A 10-year warranty is standard.
For homes that need more storage, Tesla sells Powerwall 3 Expansion units: each adds another 13.5 kWh of capacity without duplicating the core inverter, and a single system can scale up to four Expansion units, totaling 54 kWh of storage (13.5 kWh main + 40.5 kWh expansion).

The UK market got access to orders via Tesla’s website in May 2024, though actual installations were first concentrated in England, Scotland, and Wales.
