Valve’s new Steam Machine is now shipping for $1,049, and the company has made clear it won’t fight the exclusives war. Instead, it’s pitching your existing Steam library as the only platform seller you need. “We’re much more interested in having the whole PC catalog as our ‘launch exclusive,’” engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais told Bloomberg in a recent interview.

Unpacking the Hardware and Price

This isn’t the scattered collection of third-party boxes that arrived in 2015. Valve itself designed the roughly six-inch cube, packing a semi-custom AMD processor with six Zen 4 cores (12 threads) and an RDNA 3 graphics component with 28 compute units and 8GB of GDDR6 video memory. The system pairs that with 16GB of DDR5 system memory and a 512GB NVMe SSD in its $1,049 base configuration. A 2TB model bumps the price to $1,349, while the premium bundle—including the new Steam Controller and additional faceplates—reaches $1,428.

None of these include a controller, which may surprise anyone comparing the machine directly to a console. Valve expects many Steam customers already own compatible gamepads, but the omission is noticeable at this price. The company attributes the high cost partly to soaring memory and storage prices driven by AI demand, but for buyers, the sticker shock is real.

Connectivity is solid: Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Gigabit Ethernet, a microSD slot, and an integrated wireless adapter for the second-generation Steam Controller. Display output targets 4K televisions, though the integrated graphics aren’t a match for today’s big desktop cards—more on that later.

Your Games, Your Way—Mostly

Valve’s bet is that your Steam library, built over years of sales and free weekends, is more compelling than a handful of exclusive titles. Griffais put it bluntly: “Restricting where people can play a game I don’t think is a great model, at least for us.” The company famously takes a 30% cut from most Steam sales, so it profits whether you buy a Valve-made machine or a rival’s. Convincing you to stay within the Steam ecosystem—and maybe buy more games while you’re at it—is the real goal.

That means the moment you sign in, every compatible game you already own is ready to install. Cloud saves, achievements, friend lists, and controller configurations carry over. For longtime Steam users, the “launch lineup” is hundreds or even thousands of titles deep on day one. That’s a powerful argument against starting from scratch on a PlayStation or Xbox.

But “compatible” is the operative word. The whole PC catalog exists on Steam, but it doesn’t all work under SteamOS. That’s where Proton comes in.

The Proton Engine Under the Hood

Proton is the compatibility layer that translates Windows API calls into Linux-friendly equivalents, often with DirectX-to-Vulkan mapping via projects like DXVK and VKD3D-Proton. It’s not emulation; it’s on-the-fly translation that can deliver near-native performance. The Steam Deck proved the concept at scale, and Valve has spent years improving Proton, pre-caching shaders, and adding Deck Verified ratings.

For the Steam Machine, Valve has extended that verification program with Steam Machine Verified badges. A green check means the game runs well at default settings, looks legible on a TV, and works with a standard controller. Yellow warnings might indicate small text or awkward launcher steps. Unsupported games may still run if you tinker, but they’re not guaranteed.

Yet Proton has gaps that no amount of clever engineering can fully close. Some competitive shooters and MMOs rely on anti-cheat systems that don’t support the Proton environment, even if the underlying technology could. Publishers like Epic (Fortnite) and Bungie (Destiny 2) have so far declined to enable Linux support, leaving popular multiplayer titles inaccessible. Third-party launchers from Ubisoft, EA, and Rockstar can also trip up the seamless console-like experience.

Compatibility is a moving target. A game rated Verified today might break after a publisher update; an unsupported title might suddenly become playable with a Proton hotfix. Valve updates Proton regularly, but the onus is on players to stay informed.

A Checkered Past, a Clearer Future

Valve’s original Steam Machines launched in November 2015 from partners like Alienware and Zotac. They ran SteamOS 2, lacked Proton, and suffered from inconsistent hardware that confused buyers. Fewer than 500,000 sold, and the initiative quietly ended.

The Steam Deck changed everything. Released in 2022, it ran SteamOS 3 with Proton and a polished Big Picture interface, immediately giving millions of Windows games a portable home. It became a critical and commercial success, proving that Linux-based gaming hardware could work for mainstream audiences. The new Steam Machine is essentially a Deck for your TV, scaled up with more powerful silicon and faster memory.

By controlling the hardware specification, Valve avoids the fragmentation that doomed the 2015 effort. Developers can target a known performance profile; reviewers can benchmark against a fixed standard; and buyers know exactly what they’re getting. That consistency is what makes a “console-like” experience possible on PC hardware.

What You Should Do Before Buying

If the idea of a living-room PC that plays your Steam library appeals to you, a bit of research will prevent disappointment.

  1. Check your library’s compatibility. Visit your Steam Library page on a PC and filter by Steam Machine Verified. Pay special attention to the games you play most often. If your daily multiplayer title shows up as Unsupported, the Steam Machine may not be for you.
  2. Audit your storage needs. The base 512GB model will fill up quickly; modern AAA games easily exceed 100GB each. Factor in the cost of a microSD card or be prepared to uninstall and re-download games frequently.
  3. Consider your controller situation. If you don’t already own a Bluetooth controller that works with Steam, you’ll need to buy one. The new Steam Controller is an extra $149 (or included in bundles).
  4. Weigh Windows as a fallback. Valve provides Windows drivers, so you can install Windows on the Steam Machine if you absolutely need access to Game Pass or anti-cheat-shy titles. But that adds cost for a Windows license and means giving up the seamless SteamOS experience. Dual-booting is possible but eats into an already lean SSD.
  5. Wait for real-world reports. Early adopter feedback will reveal how well the system handles specific games at 4K, how noisy the cooling is, and whether the upscaling holds up in demanding titles. Given the price, patience is a virtue.

Looking Ahead

Valve’s openness invites other manufacturers to build SteamOS boxes, just as happened with handhelds after the Deck. A Lenovo or ASUS could release a more powerful living-room PC for a similar price—or a cheaper one for streaming. Valve itself may revise the Steam Machine with more video memory or lower costs once component prices settle.

Microsoft, meanwhile, watches with interest. SteamOS simplifies the gaming experience on a PC in ways Windows, with all its background services and desktop orientation, doesn’t. If consumers grow comfortable with SteamOS on their televisions, it could pressure Microsoft to improve Xbox integration on Windows or refine its own controller-first ambitions.

For now, the Steam Machine is a niche product with a clear philosophy: your library is your exclusive. Whether that’s worth $1,049 depends on what’s already sitting in your Steam account.
