Inside the Cleanroom: How Kids Build a Chip, One Game at a Time
KidZania Seoul, in the Jamsil district, already lets children role-play dozens of professions. The new TEL Semiconductor Dream Lab adds a semiconductor fabrication floor to the mix, scaled for visitors as young as five. According to Maeil Business Newspaper, the lab underwent final preparations on July 27 before opening its doors the next day, with a ceremony attended by Tokyo Electron Korea CEO Roh Tae-woo and KidZania Korea CEO Ahn Joon-sik.
The lab occupies two distinct zones. In the orientation area, children are briefed on the basics of chipmaking and don cleanroom suits—full-body garments made from the same materials used in real fabs, complete with goggles and, as photographs show, playful bunny-ear hoods. An air shower blows strong gusts to \"remove\" dust before entry.
In the experience zone, the real fun begins. Teams of six \"Dream Engineers\" receive a mission: help Chips the service robot achieve his dream of becoming a dancer by manufacturing a semiconductor. Each process station is a self-contained game:
