BYD has officially revealed the Qin Max EV, a new electric sedan capable of adding hundreds of kilometers of range faster than most drivers can finish a cup of coffee. The company says the model can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes when connected to its latest Flash Charging hardware, a claim that, if widely achievable, would put it ahead of nearly every production EV on the road today. The Qin Max will launch in China in August, with dealerships already receiving initial display units, according to executives.

A Bigger, Quicker Qin Hits the Stage

The Qin Max EV marks the largest and most technologically ambitious member of BYD’s Qin family, a lineup that has already sold hundreds of thousands of units. Regulatory filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) peg the sedan at 4,866 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,495 mm tall, on a 2,790 mm wheelbase. That makes it notably longer than a Tesla Model 3, though the American sedan retains a slightly longer wheelbase.

Official images released by BYD show a conventional three-box shape with a closed-off front fascia, slim LED headlights, and a full-width rear light bar—design cues that have become standard across the company’s Dynasty series. Inside, the cabin is dominated by a large central touchscreen, complemented by a compact digital instrument cluster, a two-spoke steering wheel, and a wireless phone charging pad. The center console appears clean and uncluttered, with minimal physical controls.

Under the skin, two battery-electric powertrain options will be available, according to MIIT data. A base single-motor setup produces 120 kW (about 161 horsepower), while a higher-output version delivers 240 kW (roughly 322 hp). Plug-in hybrid variants are also expected, though BYD has yet to confirm full specifications. Battery options, reported by CarNewsChina, include 52.868 kWh and 64.315 kWh Blade Battery packs—the second-generation units that underpin the Flash Charging architecture. Corresponding CLTC range estimates are 530 km (330 miles) and 630 km (391 miles), though Chinese test cycles typically overstate real-world figures compared to EPA ratings.

Five Minutes to Fill Up—In Theory

The charging headline is what sets the Qin Max apart. BYD first demonstrated its Flash Charging system in March, promising that vehicles equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery and compatible 1,000-volt architecture could go from 10% to 70% in five minutes, and from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes. Those figures, if routinely achieved, would transform the EV ownership experience, slashing charging stops to roughly the time required for a gasoline refuel.

Reality, however, comes with asterisks. These speeds require not just the right car but also the right charger. BYD says it is expanding its own Flash Charging network in China, but the rollout of ultra-high-power stations is still in its early stages. Peak charging speeds will likely only be available at a fraction of public chargers, and sustained thermal management can affect repeatability. Early adopters should anticipate that the 5-minute figure represents a best-case scenario under ideal conditions, not a daily guarantee.

What the Qin Max Means for Buyers—and the Industry

The Qin Max is primarily a Chinese-market play. BYD currently does not sell passenger cars in the United States, and the company has not announced any export plans for this model. For Chinese consumers, the sedan slots above the Qin L EV—a Model 3 competitor that started at 119,800 yuan ($17,500) and sold over 10,000 units in its first week. The Max’s larger footprint and advanced charging hardware will almost certainly command a higher price, though BYD has not yet revealed trim levels or pricing.

If BYD manages to bring Flash Charging to a mass-market sedan at a relatively affordable price point, it could put severe pressure on rivals like Tesla, Nio, and Xpeng, all of whom have invested in their own fast-charging networks. For everyday drivers, the real benefit will hinge on charger availability and consistent performance. Buyers who charge at home overnight may never use the full capability, while road warriors could see it as a game-changer—provided they plan routes around compatible stations.

Outside China, the Qin Max serves as a technological showcase. The arrival of sub-six-minute charging in a mainstream sedan signals that the gap between EV and ICE convenience is shrinking fast, even if geography limits who gets to experience it firsthand.

How BYD Got Here

BYD’s ascent has been swift. The company stopped producing pure internal-combustion vehicles in 2022, pivoting entirely to plug-in hybrids and battery electrics. Its Qin family, named after China’s first imperial dynasty, has been a core pillar, with models like the Qin Plus and Qin L dominating sales charts. The Qin L EV launched last year to strong demand, and the Max represents a deliberate step up in size, performance, and tech.

The Flash Charging system debuted in March 2026 as part of a broader push to address the biggest remaining consumer concern: charging time. By pairing a 1,500-volt silicon carbide platform with the next-gen Blade Battery, BYD engineered a vehicle that can accept extreme charge rates without overheating—at least in testing. The Qin Max is the first sedan to put that tech into production, following the Han L sedan into the Flash Charging lineup.

The August launch date, reported as August 13 by some Chinese outlets, will likely come with full pricing and trim details. Until then, the images and early specs serve as a teaser for what BYD is calling a “completely different B-segment fast-charging sedan” aimed at younger buyers.

What to Watch For

Prospective buyers in China should hold off on orders until the official reveal confirms which trims include Flash Charging and what those trims cost. There’s a real chance that the headline charging speed is reserved for top-spec variants, while more affordable versions use slower hardware. Early reviews and independent instrumented tests will be crucial in validating BYD’s claims.

For everyone else, the Qin Max is a signal worth watching. If BYD can scale Flash Charging infrastructure and deliver on its 5-minute promise consistently, it will set a new industry benchmark that legacy automakers and startups alike must answer.
