Microsoft’s January 2026 Patch Tuesday fixes a local elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in Windows Management Services that could hand attackers full SYSTEM control of a machine. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-20923, was disclosed on January 13 with the release of cumulative updates for all supported Windows versions. While exploitation requires an attacker to already have a foothold on a device, the component’s privileged role makes this a dangerous stepping stone in corporate environments.

The bigger picture: How privilege escalation fuels cyberattacks

Elevation-of-privilege bugs are the second stage in the modern attack chain. Initial access often comes via phishing, drive-by downloads, or stolen credentials.
