It’s built for one specific task: helping students actually learn the material, not just complete assignments. Instead of generating essays or solving problems in one click, the agent guides students through the material using flashcards, practice quizzes, and step-by-step reasoning, all while citing the student’s own uploaded notes and documents.
That’s a deliberate departure from the “instant answer” AI many students already use on their phones. With 92% of students reporting they’ve turned to AI for schoolwork, according to Microsoft’s latest education research, the company is betting that schools want an alternative—a managed, learning-focused tool that keeps the thinking on the student’s side of the screen.
What Study and Learn Actually Does
Study and Learn is a first-party agent within Microsoft 365 Copilot, which means it’s integrated into the same environment where many schools already manage assignments, files, and collaboration through Teams and OneNote. The agent works directly with a student’s own learning materials: Word documents, PowerPoint slides, PDFs of textbooks or handouts. When it generates an explanation or a quiz question, it includes a citation pointing back to the source material—so students can verify information themselves.

Study and Learn gives teachers a new option: a tool that nudges students toward better study habits, rather than undermining them.
