Dell Technologies and Microsoft have launched Dell PowerScale for Microsoft Azure into public preview, giving businesses a way to consume the battle-tested OneFS distributed file system as a fully managed service within the Azure portal. The move integrates Dell’s enterprise-grade scale-out storage directly into Azure’s control plane, letting organizations run demanding file workloads—from AI model training to media rendering—without having to manage the underlying clusters themselves. With support for up to 8.4 petabytes in a single namespace and simultaneous multi-protocol access, the service aims to simplify hybrid cloud operations while accelerating data-hungry applications.

A Managed File Service Arrives in Azure

PowerScale for Azure now comes in two distinct flavors. The existing customer-managed model remains available—IT teams deploy OneFS on Azure VMs and handle all configuration, patching, and scaling. The new, Dell-managed version flips that script: Dell provisions and operates the infrastructure, and you consume it as a service billed through the Azure Marketplace. It appears right inside the Azure Portal, alongside your other resources, and ties into Azure Resource Manager, role-based access control, and Azure Monitor telemetry.

Under the hood, Dell has engineered custom compute SKUs with non-volatile memory (NVRAM) that, according to the vendor, slash metadata latency and boost throughput for small-file and highly concurrent workloads. Dell claims performance “up to 4× greater than our closest competitor,” though they haven’t named the rival. The service supports NFS, SMB, and S3 protocols simultaneously against the same data set, so applications that need POSIX semantics and object access can share a single, consistent namespace. Core OneFS data services—snapshots, inline compression, deduplication, SmartLock immutability, CloudPools tiering, and SyncIQ asynchronous replication—all come along for the ride.

During the public preview, the managed offering scales to 8.4 petabytes of usable capacity in one namespace. That’s enough for very large AI training datasets, multi-petabyte media archives, or distributed EDA simulations. Customer-managed clusters may have different capacity baselines, so check Dell’s planning docs if you stay on that path.

How We Got Here

PowerScale traces its lineage to the Isilon scale-out NAS systems, which Dell acquired in 2010. The OneFS operating system has since become a staple in media, life sciences, and high-performance computing for its ability to handle billions of files without performance cliffs. In recent years, Dell delivered virtual OneFS instances for Azure so customers could run self-managed clusters in the cloud, but the operational burden remained on their shoulders.

Last year, Dell and Microsoft deepened their partnership, announcing hybrid cloud integrations and co-engineering efforts. The Azure Native integration for PowerScale is a direct outcome of that collaboration. It mirrors a broader industry shift where traditional storage vendors wrap their software stacks into cloud-managed services—think NetApp’s Azure NetApp Files or Qumulo’s native Azure offering. By embracing Azure’s control plane, Dell is removing friction for enterprises that want enterprise file storage without retraining their teams on entirely new interfaces.

How to Get Started and What to Validate

Public preview means you can request access today through the Azure Marketplace. Before committing production data, follow these steps:

  • Check region support: Confirm that the Azure regions where your compute lives are supported. During preview, coverage may be limited.
  • Run a proof of concept: Provision a managed cluster and run representative workloads—parallel training reads, multi-user media editing, or EDA simulations. Measure throughput, metadata latency, and tail latency under realistic concurrency.
  • Test protection and recovery: Validate snapshot frequency, restore times, and SyncIQ replication failover. Confirm immutability controls and test restoration from immutable copies in a simulated ransomware scenario.

Expect region expansion, refined SLAs, and independent benchmarks that validate or challenge the “4× faster” claim.
