But its placement and the breadth of data it collects have drawn fresh attention, especially as regulators tighten the screws on hidden data-sharing opt-ins. For anyone who values digital privacy — whether on an iPhone, Android, or a Windows desktop — this is a control worth flipping.
A privacy toggle buried where you’d never look
When iPhone users set out to harden their privacy, the first stop is normally Settings > Privacy & Security. That’s where you find granular controls for location services, tracking, microphone, camera, and app permissions. Apple has also placed the App Privacy Report and Safety Check in that menu, reinforcing the idea that everything privacy-related lives there.
Yet the switch that determines whether Apple stores your Safari, Siri, and Spotlight queries sits in an entirely different section: Settings > Search. How to turn off search retention
